How to Generate Ideas For Your Landscaping Projects

1. Define the Landscaping Problem Clearly.

Take some draft paper and draw a plan of your property or the piece of your property you are trying to design. Mentally divide each part of the landscape into separate pieces that you will deal with one at a time. Write out what you would like to accomplish in each of these areas and how they will be used. (i.e. Shade, color, borders, walkways, etc.)

2. Fill your mind.

Fill your mind with new ideas by visiting nurseries, public gardens, public buildings, neighborhoods you have never visited before.  Look through books, magazines and other publications for ideas.  Don't restrict yourself to just landscaping publications, open your mind up and look at all kinds of different materials.  You might be surprised at how many places you will find inspiration that you didn't expect.

3. Brainstorm Landscape Ideas.

There is tremendous power in getting several brains together working on the same wavelength. Get friends and family together and review your list. Write down as many ideas as you can in relation to the objectives you outlined.

At this point don't worry about about how you will do things or anything like that. Focus strictly on idea generation without editing. Try to encourage creativity and don't be critical of any ideas. If someone becomes critical of any ideas it will stifle creativity

4. Daydream!!! Take Some Time and Let Your Creative Subconscious Work For You.

Your sub-conscious mind continues to work for you around the clock. While you are traveling, sleeping, or doing other routine items feel free to let your mind wander. Take a break and sleep on it. You may be surprised at how successful switching off can be.

5. Your Landscaping Ideas Notebook.

Carry a pen with a pocket size pad everywhere you go and capture every idea that comes to you. Don't say "I'll write it down later" as chances are slim that you will in fact do it. Many of your ideas will be great. Capture them, preserve them, then apply them.
